Blogging looks dead from the outside and it very much isn't from the inside. Google still sends billions of clicks a month to independent sites — the game just changed. Here's how blogs actually make money today.

The two real income streams

1. Display ads (Google AdSense, Ezoic, Mediavine) — you get paid per 1,000 pageviews. RPMs in 2026 range from $5 to $40 depending on niche and country.

2. Affiliate commissions — you recommend a product, someone buys, you get 3–50% of the sale. Higher ceiling, more work per dollar.

Traffic math (be honest with yourself)

To earn ~$1,000/month from AdSense alone, you need roughly 100,000 pageviews/month in a mid-RPM niche. That's real work — usually 12–24 months of consistent publishing. Affiliate can hit the same number with 10,000 pageviews if the intent is right.

Best niches for AdSense: personal finance, insurance, software reviews, home & garden, legal, health. Worst: general lifestyle, entertainment news, poetry. Pick something you can write about for 200 posts without hating it — passion + payout beats either alone.

What to write

Not opinion pieces. Write search-first posts that answer specific questions:

Each post should target a keyword with 100–5,000 monthly searches and low competition.

Publishing rhythm
