Affiliate Marketing Basics: A Complete Starter Guide

Affiliate marketing is the simplest online business model: you recommend a product, someone buys through your link, the seller pays you a commission. No inventory, no shipping, no customer support. Here's how to actually make it work.

How the link works

You sign up for an affiliate program → they give you a unique tracking URL → you share that URL in your content → when someone clicks and buys within a cookie window (usually 24 hours to 90 days), you earn a commission.

Best programs for beginners

  • Amazon Associates — huge catalog, tiny commissions (1–10%), 24-hour cookie
  • Impact / ShareASale / CJ — networks with thousands of brands
  • Software SaaS (Notion, Canva, ConvertKit, hosting) — recurring commissions, 20–40%
  • Course platforms (Skillshare, Coursera) — one-time payouts, easy to promote
  • Direct programs — most tools you use daily have their own affiliate page

Rule: promote only what you'd recommend to a friend for free. Trust converts, hype doesn't.

The 3 content formats that convert

1. "Best X for Y" listicles — highest intent, easy to rank

2. "X vs Y" comparisons — reader is deciding between two things right now

3. Tutorials that need the product — "how to do Z with tool X"

Ignore: personal opinion posts, "top 10 things I like" fluff, generic reviews with no comparison.

Where to publish

  • Blog — best for SEO-driven affiliate, compounds for years
  • YouTube — highest conversion per view, links in description
  • Newsletter — engaged audience, easy sells
  • TikTok / Reels — high reach, hard to convert without a landing page
  • Reddit / Quora — works but easy to get banned, read the rules

Pick one to master before spreading.

The math

If a product costs $50 with a 30% commission = $15/sale. To earn $1,500/month you need 100 sales. On a blog that converts at 2%, that's 5,000 targeted clicks/month — very achievable in year 2.

Disclosure and trust

Legally required in most countries: state clearly that links are affiliate. Readers respect it, Google requires it, and it doesn't hurt conversion — because your audience already assumes it.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Promoting 20 products from one post — pick 1–3
  • Chasing high commissions on products you've never used
  • Ignoring search intent — writing "why I love X" instead of "best X for Y"
  • Giving up at month 3 before Google indexes anything

Affiliate income takes 6–12 months to build meaningfully but keeps paying with almost no ongoing work. That's the whole appeal.
